Kinky Boots' Cyndi Lauper & Harvey Fierstein on Their BACA-Winning New Musical: 'You Gotta Listen to the Voice of the People'

"You know what? Fans are awesome! I’m gonna call Kinky Boots fans 'Kinks' from now on!" Cyndi Lauper joyously exclaimed as she headed backstage at the Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards. Lauper and her Kinky collaborator Harvey Fierstein accepted the trophy for Favorite New Musical and couldn't wait to celebrate with their fierce cast.

"This is such a crazy show but I think this is awesome! I really do because it’s from the fans. Because it’s from the people! You gotta listen to the voice of the people," said Lauper.

"Look! The award’s got our names on it—it says Harvey Fierpeep and Cyndi Loopy. It’s a lot of fun because it is a fun award and it is from fans that actually go online. This didn’t exist 15 years ago, the whole online thing. This online community thing is very exciting. Everybody is online and everybody can be a part of Broadway in whatever role they want to play," said Fierstein.

So how did they react when their Kinky Boots stars Billy Porter and Annaleigh Ashford won for Favorite Actor in a Musical and Favorite Funny Performance? "That’s very sweet for us. We want everybody to win," said Fierstein. "I happen to have friends in other shows too. Even on the guys’ front because Bertie [Carvel] got one and Santino [Fontana] got one. Everybody got something."
